Mental health is an epidemic. According to the World Health Organization, around 450 million people currently struggle with mental illness, making it the leading cause of disability worldwide. Mental health affects more than 6.7 million of us. In fact, one in two Canadians have—or have had—a mental illness by the time they reach 40 years of age.

The mental health issues that I am going to address in this Master Course are anxiety and depression. If you have other mental health issues like OCD or PTSD, you will also learn so much.

Turns out you don’t have to change your current brain or body to change. Awareness and being honest with yourself will have huge shifts in the way you treat yourself. 

 WHY YOU SHOULD PAY ATTENTION? 
 My name is Dara and I have dropped 50 pounds of physical weight as a result of me addressing the mental health issues I was carrying around.

After a mandatory relocation to another province (leaving my extended family and quilt besties behind) and my youngest going off to school within 3 months of each other, I found myself in a depression that I never knew was possible for someone like me.

Not only was I depressed but anxiety was a constant companion. I have always used being a workaholic as a coping strategy but then perimenopause came up.

There were so many misconceptions about ‘the change’ that I gained more weight than I have ever been.  

 WHAT HAPPENED TO ME-BEYOND MY WILDEST DREAMS 
 One day I was scrolling Instagram trying to numb out and I signed up for 6 free life coaching sessions in July 2018.

From those sessions I learned how to get to the root of my depression and anxiety. I learned how to connect my brain with my body. I started to lose weight as a side effect.

I have lost 50 pounds and kept off this weight since. NOT because I have to stay skinny or thin or be able to wear those size 6 jeans.

I keep the weight off because I work through my struggles and no longer turn to food to HIDE or NUMB OUT or ESCAPE all the STRUGGLES that happen with EVERYDAY LIFE. 
YOUR HEALTH IS KEY
I learned how unhealthy my thought patterns were. I learned how often I was hiding because of SHAME. I also saw how often I just didn’t know how to cope and instead of asking for help, I hid behind working more, eating more, and shaming myself more. When I was finally honest with myself I saw how to work through the challenges.
